Personal information we collect
Information you provide to us
Personal information you may provide to us through the Service or otherwise includes:
- Contact data, such as your first and last name, email address, and phone number (if you add one).
- Demographic data, such as your date of birth, biological sex, and height.
- Profile data, such as your username and password, profile photo, bio, links, the stats you choose to make public, and the goals, training experience, activity level, and preferences you set.
- Fitness and health data, including:
- training data, such as workouts, exercises, sets, weights, reps, saved workout templates, and workout history;
- nutrition data, such as foods you log, serving sizes, meals, macros, calorie targets, and the estimates Chalk makes from that data;
- body data, such as your weight, body measurements, and the progress photos you choose to record; and
- Apple Health data, as described below.
- Coaching data. If you work with a coach on Chalk, the assignments they send, the check-ins you submit, and the plans you buy. If you coach, the information in your coach application and profile, such as your experience, certifications, specializations, and links to your work.
- Communications data, based on our exchanges with you, including when you contact us for support, by email, or through social media.
- Messages and calls. Direct and group messages you send through the Service, including the photos, videos, and voice notes you attach. For voice and video calls, who called whom, when, and for how long. Calls are relayed live through our calling provider and are not recorded.
- User-generated content and input data, such as posts, stories, comments, likes, follows, and workouts you share, what you type into features that draft content with AI, and associated metadata. Metadata includes information about how, when, where, and by whom content was created, and how it has been formatted or edited.
- Transactional data, such as your subscription status and history, the coaching plans you buy or sell, and related transaction records.
- Payment data. Subscriptions are billed through Apple, and payments to coaches are processed by Stripe. Apple and Stripe collect your payment card details directly; Chalk never receives your card number and does not store payment card details. If you coach, Stripe collects the identity, tax, and bank details it needs to verify you and pay you out.
- Marketing data, such as your preferences for receiving our communications and, if you join the waitlist, whether you train or coach and the campaign or page that brought you to us.
- Other data not specifically listed here, which we will use as described in this Privacy Policy or as otherwise disclosed at the time of collection.
Apple Health data. If you connect Apple Health, Chalk reads the categories you approve (weight, body fat percentage, lean body mass, waist circumference, and steps) to fill in your log and improve your metabolic estimates. Chalk does not write to Apple Health. We never sell Apple Health data or use it for advertising, marketing, or analytics. We share it only with a coach you connect with and with the service providers that store and process it for us under contract.
Third-party sources
We may combine personal information we receive from you with personal information falling within one of the categories identified above that we obtain from other sources, such as:
- Apple Health, when you connect it, as described above.
- Sign-in providers. If you sign in with Apple or Google, the identifier, name, and email address those services share with us based on your account settings.
- Other users, such as a coach who sends you assignments, or a user who mentions you, messages you, or invites you.
- Service providers that provide services on our behalf or help us operate the Service or our business, such as Apple, RevenueCat, and Stripe, which tell us the status of your subscriptions and payments.
- Business transaction partners. We may receive personal information in connection with an actual or prospective business transaction. For example, we may receive your personal information from an entity we acquire or are acquired by, a successor, or assignee or any party involved in a business transaction such as a merger, acquisition, sale of assets, or similar transaction, or in the context of an insolvency, bankruptcy, or receivership.
Automatic data collection
We and our service providers may automatically log information about you, your computer or mobile device, and your interaction over time with the Service, our communications, and other online services, such as:
- Device data, such as your mobile device’s operating system type and version, manufacturer and model, browser type, app version, device type, IP address, unique identifiers (such as device and push notification identifiers), language and time zone settings, and general location information such as city, state, or geographic area, which we infer from your IP address.
- Online activity data, such as the screens and pages you view, how long you spend on them, the website or campaign that brought you to the Service, navigation paths, the features you use, access times and duration, and crash and error reports.
- Communication interaction data, such as whether you open our emails or click links in them, which may be recorded through pixel tags (also known as clear GIFs) embedded in our emails.
The app does not ask for access to your location or your contacts, and we do not use advertising identifiers. For more information about our automatic collection of data, see Tracking and other technologies.
Data about others. Coaches invite athletes to Chalk with a link, so we do not collect an invitee’s contact details. If you tell us about someone else, for example in a message to support, please only do so if you have their permission.
Tracking and other technologies
Browser storage and SDKs. Our website does not use cookies. Our automatic data collection relies on browser storage on the website and a software development kit (SDK) in the app:
- The website stores a random identifier in your browser’s local storage, and the campaign and referring page in session storage, so we can count visits and see which campaigns bring people to the waitlist. It sends these events to our analytics provider, Mixpanel, and it does not send them when your browser sends a Do Not Track signal.
- The app uses Mixpanel’s SDK to record product analytics events, such as the screens you view and the features you use. Some events include details of what you did, such as the goals and activity level you choose during onboarding, the meal type and calories of a food you log, or a workout’s duration and number of exercises. These events are tied to a random identifier and, once you sign in, to your Chalk user ID and username. We do not send your email address, your name, body measurements, photos, or Apple Health data to Mixpanel.
We do not allow third parties to collect personal information about your online activities over time and across other websites or apps through the Service.
AI technologies. Features that draft content with AI, such as generating a workout template, are powered by Anthropic. When you use one, what you type into it and the exercise library it draws from are sent to Anthropic to generate the response. Our agreement with Anthropic does not allow it to use this content to train its AI models, and we do not use your personal information to train AI models.
For information about your choices, see Your choices.
How we use your personal information
We may use your personal information for the following purposes or as otherwise described at the time of collection:
Service delivery and operations. We may use your personal information to:
- provide the Service, including logging your training and nutrition, showing your history, estimating your daily energy needs, delivering coaching, messages, and calls, and syncing across your devices;
- enable security features of the Service and keep your account secure;
- establish and maintain your profile on the Service;
- facilitate social features of the Service, such as follows, posts, stories, comments, suggestions of people to follow, and messaging;
- communicate with you about the Service, including by sending password reset codes, receipts, reminders and other push notifications, security alerts, and support and administrative messages; and
- provide support for the Service, and respond to your requests, questions, and feedback.
Service personalization. We may use your personal information to:
- understand your needs and interests;
- personalize your experience with the Service, such as your calorie and training targets, suggestions, and reminders; and
- remember your selections and preferences.
Service improvement and analytics. We may use your personal information to analyze your usage of the Service, improve the Service and the rest of our business, help us understand user activity on the Service, including which screens are most and least visited and how people move around the Service, and develop new products and services. We use Mixpanel for this purpose.
Marketing. We may send you emails about Chalk, such as updates about the waitlist and our launch, and may personalize these messages based on your needs and interests. You may opt out of our marketing communications as described in Your choices. We do not use your personal information for interest-based advertising, and we do not use your health, training, nutrition, or body data for any advertising.
Compliance and protection. We may use your personal information to:
- comply with applicable laws, lawful requests, and legal process, such as to respond to subpoenas, investigations, or requests from government authorities;
- protect our, your, or others’ rights, privacy, safety, or property (including by making and defending legal claims);
- audit our internal processes for compliance with legal and contractual requirements or our internal policies;
- enforce the terms and conditions that govern the Service, including our community rules and minimum age; and
- prevent, identify, investigate, and deter fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized, unethical, or illegal activity, including cyberattacks and identity theft.
Data sharing in the context of corporate events. We may share certain personal information in the context of actual or prospective corporate events. For more information, see How we share your personal information.
To create aggregated, de-identified, or anonymized data. We may create aggregated, de-identified, or anonymized data from your personal information and other individuals whose personal information we collect. We make personal information into de-identified or anonymized data by removing information that makes the data identifiable to you, and we will not attempt to reidentify any such data. We may use this aggregated, de-identified, or anonymized data and share it with third parties for our lawful business purposes, including analyzing and improving the Service and promoting our business. We do not use Apple Health data for this purpose.
Further uses. In some cases, we may use your personal information for further uses, in which case we will ask for your consent to use your personal information for those further purposes if they are not compatible with the initial purpose for which the information was collected.
Fitness and health data
We treat your fitness and health data as sensitive. We use your training, nutrition, body measurements, progress photos, and Apple Health data to provide the Service to you and to the coach you connect with, to keep the Service secure, and to meet legal obligations. We also use some details of your training and nutrition to understand how features are used so we can improve them, as described in Tracking and other technologies. We never sell this data or use it for advertising. Metabolic and energy estimates are calculations based on the data you log. They are not medical advice.
Retention
We generally retain personal information to fulfill the purposes for which we collected it, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements, establishing or defending legal claims, or for fraud prevention purposes. To determine the appropriate retention period for personal information, we may consider factors such as the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of your personal information, the purposes for which we process your personal information and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements.
We keep your account data for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings, and you do not need to contact us to do it. Deleting your account signs you out on every device, removes you from group conversations, and immediately erases your name, email address, phone number, username, bio, profile photo, and password. The app also asks our analytics provider to delete your analytics profile. Within 24 hours, we then erase the rest of your data: your workouts, personal records, check-ins, progress photos, habits, nutrition logs, body measurements, and metabolic estimates; your posts, comments, likes, and stories, along with other people’s reposts of and comments on your posts; your follows, blocks, mutes, and nudges; your notifications and call history; and the photos, videos, and voice messages you uploaded. Messages you sent stay in place in the other person’s conversation, but their text and attachments are erased and they show as “Message deleted”. If you joined the waitlist with the same email address, that entry is deleted too.
After you delete your account, we keep a small number of records with your name and contact details removed: workouts and exercises you created that other people saved or trained with, so their training history stays intact; check-in forms, habits, and coaching plans that your athletes used; records of coaching payments and subscriptions, which we keep for legal and accounting reasons; and reports, moderation actions, and security logs. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription you bought through the App Store or Google Play, so cancel it in your store account settings to stop future charges. Other waitlist entries are kept until you ask to be removed or until we no longer need them. When we no longer require the personal information we have collected about you, we may either delete it, anonymize it, or isolate it from further processing.
How we share your personal information
We may share your personal information with the following parties (or as otherwise described in this Privacy Policy, in other applicable notices, or at the time of collection).
Your coach. When you connect with a coach on Chalk, they can see your training, nutrition, check-ins, messages, progress photos, body measurements, and metabolic estimates (which can use weight and steps from Apple Health), along with your profile details, including your date of birth. Ending the coaching relationship stops future sharing.
Other users and the public. Your public profile and the content you post publicly can be seen by other users of the Service, and your messages can be seen by the people in the conversation. You control what is public. Information you make public can be seen, collected, and used by others, including being cached, copied, screen captured, or stored elsewhere by others, and we are not responsible for any such use of this information.
Service providers. Third parties that provide services on our behalf or help us operate the Service or our business, under contract: hosting (Amazon Web Services), file storage (Cloudflare), transactional email (Resend), support email (Google Workspace), push notifications and app updates (Expo and Apple), voice and video calls (Fishjam), analytics (Mixpanel), subscription management (RevenueCat), AI features (Anthropic), and link handling for invites (Detour). We require these providers by contract to use your personal information only to provide services to us and to protect it with safeguards at least as protective as those in this Privacy Policy.
Payment processors. Subscriptions are billed by Apple, and coaching payments are processed by Stripe. Any payment card information you use to make a purchase is collected and processed directly by them. Apple may use your payment data in accordance with its privacy policy at apple.com/legal/privacy, and Stripe may use your payment data in accordance with its privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy.
Third parties designated by you. We may share your personal information with third parties where you have instructed us or provided your consent to do so.
Linked third-party services. If you log into the Service with, or otherwise link your account to, a third-party service such as Apple or Google, we may share your personal information with that third-party service. The third party’s use of the shared information will be governed by its privacy policy and the settings associated with your account with that service.
Professional advisors. Professional advisors, such as lawyers, auditors, bankers, and insurers, in the course of the professional services that they render to us.
Authorities and others. Law enforcement, government authorities, and private parties, as we believe in good faith to be necessary or appropriate for the compliance and protection purposes described above.
Business transferees. We may disclose personal information in the context of actual or prospective business transactions (for example, investments in Chalk, financing of Chalk, public stock offerings, or the sale, transfer, or merger of all or part of our business, assets, or shares). For example, we may need to share certain personal information with prospective counterparties and their advisers. We may also disclose your personal information to an acquirer, successor, or assignee of Chalk as part of any merger, acquisition, sale of assets, or similar transaction, or in the event of an insolvency, bankruptcy, or receivership in which personal information is transferred to one or more third parties as one of our business assets. We would tell you before your data became subject to a different privacy policy.
Your choices
In this section, we describe the rights and choices available to all users. Users who are located in certain U.S. states can find additional information about their rights in the State privacy rights notice.

Apple Health. You can disconnect Apple Health at any time from the Health app on your iPhone.
Website analytics. Our website does not send analytics events when your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, and you can clear or block browser storage in your browser settings. The app does not respond to Do Not Track signals.
Blocking images and clear GIFs. Most browsers and devices allow you to configure your device to prevent images from loading. To do this, follow the instructions in your particular browser or device settings.
Privacy settings. We make available certain privacy settings in the app, including options to control what you share publicly.
Declining to provide information. We need to collect personal information to provide certain services. If you do not provide the information we identify as required or mandatory, we may not be able to provide those services.
Linked third-party platforms. If you choose to connect to the Service through a third-party platform, you may be able to use your settings in your account with that platform to limit the information we receive from it. If you revoke our ability to access information from a third-party platform, that choice will not apply to information that we have already received from that third party.
Delete your content or close your account. You can delete content you post from within the app, and you can delete your account and its data at any time from Settings, as described in Retention.
Other sites and services
The Service may contain links to websites, mobile applications, and other online services operated by third parties. In addition, our content may be integrated into web pages or other online services that are not associated with us. These links and integrations are not an endorsement of, or representation that we are affiliated with, any third party. We do not control websites, mobile applications, or online services operated by third parties, and we are not responsible for their actions. We encourage you to read the privacy policies of the other websites, mobile applications, and online services you use.
Security
We employ technical, organizational, and physical safeguards designed to protect the personal information we collect. Data travels over encrypted connections and is stored with providers that encrypt it at rest, and access inside Chalk is limited to the people who need it to operate the Service. However, security risk is inherent in all internet and information technologies, and we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information. Please use a strong, unique password.
International data transfer
We are headquartered in Georgia, in the United States, and may use service providers that operate in other countries. Your personal information may be transferred to the United States or other locations where privacy laws may not be as protective as those in your state, province, or country. If you use Chalk from outside the United States, you are sending your data to the United States.
Children and teens
The Service is not intended for anyone under 16 years of age, and you must be at least 16 to create an account or join the waitlist. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 16 has given us personal information, please contact us at support@trychalk.app. If we learn that we have collected personal information from someone under 16, we will delete it.
People who are 16 or 17 may use the Service with the permission of a parent or guardian, as described in our Terms of Service. We do not sell their personal information or use it for targeted advertising.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. Other changes are effective when we post the updated Privacy Policy, and the date at the top of this page shows the current version. Your use of the Service after a modified Privacy Policy takes effect indicates your acknowledgment that it applies to your interactions with the Service and our business.
